What Were They Thinking?

I am adding a new feature to FromDesign2Build.com that pokes some fun at the ridiculous things that contractors do for reasons known only to them.  You know exactly what I’m talking about.  Those bizarre landscape solutions that you see when you are driving around or meeting with clients that make you shake your head and say, “what were they thinking”?

I will get things started with some “unique landscape solutions” that I have recently found, but my goal is for you guys to send in photos of some of the interesting things that you see in your neighborhood.  Just take a picture, add a comment (if you want) and email it to us.  We’ll post it on the site for everyone to see and make fun of. Please include your name and company name.

Once we get things going we will set up a poll so you can vote on your favorite.  The winning submission will receive a crystal “What Were They Thinking” award courtesy of FromDesign2Build.com

We all can use a good laugh now and then so I am making this feature available to both members and non-members.

So take your iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, smartphone or digital camera and send in your submissions to jody.shilan@FromDesign2Build.com.  Operators are standing by.

My wife and I would like a fire hazard
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
My wife and I would like a fire hazard This one completely baffles me. Let's see how this thought process went. Fire pits burn wood. Our deck is made of wood. Let's build a fire pit on our deck. . . . keep reading
Be Careful What You Wish For
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Be Careful What You Wish For When discussing the types of plant material they liked, these homeowners must have stressed the fact that they really, really, really liked barberry. It's either that or one of the nurseries was running a super duper blue light special on 'burgundy . . . keep reading
What Was I Thinking?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
What Was I Thinking? This one is actually what was I thinking. No I am not just taking a picture of my FJ Cruiser to show off. I wanted to show you something that I did last week that many of you can relate to. Like many of you, my mornings are very rushed. This morning was just a . . . keep reading
We Don't Need No Stinkin' Curb Cut
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
We Don't Need No Stinkin' Curb Cut I can only attribute this to the quick thinking and careful planning of the local municipality. Faced with a difficult decision of how to deal with this misaligned curb cut at a local elementary school, the"powers that be" decided that an inexpensive yet creative . . . keep reading
Can You Stagger Them?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Can You Stagger Them? I guess these clients needed to be a little more specific to their landscape contractor when they requested screening from the road. In addition to telling the contractor that they wanted the arborvitae staggered in two rows, they probably should have . . . keep reading
Do You Have Anything Fast Growing?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Do You Have Anything Fast Growing? My guess is that these residents didn't love the fact that they were on a very narrow lot on very busy street. They were probably just looking to get some immediate privacy. "Why I have the perfect selection, Mr. and Mrs. Homeowner. It's called a . . . keep reading
One of these things is not like the other
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
One of these things is not like the other I guess when this homeowner needed a replacement evergreen for their silly cap yew hedge they didn't specify what type of . . . keep reading
Why Grind It, When You Can "Stumpscape" It?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Why Grind It, When You Can "Stumpscape" It? Leave it to those kooky homeowners and artsy landscape contractors to create a whole new genre of landscape design that I am officially calling "Stumpscaping". These colorful "focal points" can be found all over suburban America in any neighborhood, . . . keep reading

What's in a name?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
What's in a name? I was flipping through Turf magazine this week just minding my own business when this week's WWTT just popped right out at me. . . . keep reading
As easy as 1, 2, 3?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
As easy as 1, 2, 3? You see this everywhere. Perfectly shaped street trees get a little too big and voila you have street tree topiary. This one reminds me of "the monster" in bugs bunny. Send us pictures of your favorites. . . . keep reading
Inspired By The Great Pyramids
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Inspired By The Great Pyramids These folks must have just gotten back from Egypt and wanted to the relive the experience of climbing lots of steps at home. Beside the obvious, that no one in their right mind will use them, I figure . . . keep reading
Built by the Oompa-Loompa's?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Built by the Oompa-Loompa's? I guess this homeowner was influenced by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory when they planned out their landscape. I checked, the snozberries actually taste like snozberries. . . . keep reading
What came first, the driveway or the pavers?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
What came first, the driveway or the pavers? This is one of my favorites. I have a great idea. Let's start laying the pavers at the entrance of the driveway so that we make it impossible for anyone (including us) to drive on it until we are done. This way we can waste both time and money. . . . keep reading
It's Reddish Grey
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
It's Reddish Grey I swear it was grey when we put it in. I guess the color washed off from all of the acid rain we've been having lately. . . . keep reading
Follow the Red Brick Road?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Follow the Red Brick Road? My only guess is that this pattern was inspired by the Yellow Brick Road in the Wizard of Oz. Maybe it was installed by "drunkin munchkins"? . . . keep reading
Stone Pizza Anyone?
Jody Shilan, Jody Shilan Designs, LLC
Stone Pizza Anyone? I guess it's fun to play with extra pavers and wallstone and create a "patio for 1". But I think this guy actually ordered this . . . keep reading
